Tamal graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts with a specialization in print making from the Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. He went on to pursue a Master of Visual Arts degree from RBU, with a dissertation on “Child Art”. He was awarded the National Scholarship at Viswa Bharati, Shantiniketan and Junior Fellowship Government of India. He has also been a recipient of the INLAKS Foundation Grant to work at the Cholamandalam Artists’ Village.
Tamal’s professional engagements include working as Production Designer for various documentary films and stage performances. He has widely exhibited all over the country, including installation projects and site-specific art projects. He has been associated with teaching for the last 20 years at various institutions and universities across the country. As Founder Member and HOD at Multimedia Department, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, he has been instrumental in designing the curriculum for their programme.
